For over 20 years, Khanh has worked tirelessly on his five-hectare farm, cultivating some of the finest cashew nuts in the region. Khanh’s journey began when he inherited the farm from his father, who taught him the value of working with the earth. With its mineral-rich red soil and tropical climate, Binh Phuoc is known as Vietnam’s cashew capital. Yet, growing cashews is far from simple. From planting and nurturing trees to harvesting and processing the nuts, every step requires precision, patience, and unrelenting dedication.
The Life of a Cashew Farmer
Khanh’s farm produces about 8,000 kilograms of raw cashew nuts each year, yet this number represents countless hours of labor. Harvest season is the most demanding time of the year. Khanh and his family rise early to gather the cashew apples that fall to the ground, each one containing a single precious nut encased in a hard shell. The nuts are then carefully dried and processed to preserve their natural flavor and quality.
But farming is not without its challenges. Like many small-scale farmers, Khanh has faced the unpredictability of weather, rising production costs, and the struggle to sell his produce at fair prices. Often, middlemen offered him far less than what his high-quality nuts deserved, making it difficult for him to provide for his family or reinvest in his farm.
